Two-year-old boy dies in house fire

JAMES CALATA - SAPS James Calata detectives are investigating an inquest following the death of a 2-year-old boy at a house in Masakhane Township.

It is alleged that on 18 July 2022 at 08:00, the granny and home owner already left and went to work, when the 22-year-old mother of the boy quickly stepped out to fetch clothes at her sister's house not far from her home.

She left the 2-year-old boy sleeping in his grandmother’s bedroom with another child, a 4-year-old boy, in the house. On her way back, the mother heard that their home was on fire. When she got home, the house was already burning and she found the 2-year-old boy laying on the floor. The child was taken to hospital where he later passed away.

At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown.

Police are warning the community that under no circumstances must children be left alone at home.

The Acting District Commissioner Brig Asogran Naidoo expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family that lost the little boy in this tragic incident.
