Suspect to appear in court for road accident fund fraud

EASTERN CAPE – A 55-year-old female suspect is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s court today after being traced and arrested by the East London Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Hawks on 13 April 2022 for charges of Road Accident Fraud (RAF) fraud.

It is alleged that during 2017, the suspect whose two children died in a car accident, submitted a claim with RAF stating that she had been left with a granddaughter whom she is taking care of.

The claim was processed by RAF but before the pay out a thorough verification with regard to the parents was done with Home Affairs. It was discovered that the mother to the granddaughter was still alive.

The East London Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Hawks made a thorough investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect on 13 June 2021. The claimant nearly defrauded RAF cash to the value of more than R1 million.

The team is lauded by the Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, Major General Obed Ngwenya for the success.
