Former MTN employee charged with R12 million fraud

GAUTENG – The accused, Gretta Nozuko Nxusani (62), Nozuko Nxusani (PTY) Ltd and former Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) employee, Mbulaheni Robert Madzonga (67) appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 6 December 2022 on charges of theft and fraud.

It is alleged that on 3 March 2010, Madzonga deserted his job description by authorising Nozuko Nxusani (PTY) Ltd to conduct legal service at the (MTN) and authorised payment of approximately R12.3 million to the very same company knowing very well that they did not render the services that they were contracted to deliver. An internal investigation was conducted within the company and the matter was reported to the Johannesburg based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation on 10 August 2017 for further analysis.

Additional investigation revealed that Madzonga is linked to the VBS corruption case and also allegedly benefited from this current fraudulent activity. On 6 December 2022, the accused handed themselves to the authorities after a warrant for their arrest was issued. They were both granted R10 000-00 bail each.

The matter was postponed to 15 February 2023 for further investigation. The money has not been recovered.
