Economic infrastructure task team arrests cable thieves

The Economic Infrastructure Task Team remains resolute in the fight against theft and damage of vital infrastructure.

Joined by the City Of Cape Town Law Enforcement members on Saturday 12 November 2022, the team conducted operations in scrap yards around Elsies River and arrested three suspects. One was found in possession of copper cables weighing 555kg, while two suspects were in possession of two buckets of shiny bright copper. The suspects were arrested and the copper cables were confiscated.

Furthermore, on Monday, 14 October 2022, members of the Task Team stopped and searched a vehicle that was headed to a scrap yard in Elsies River. They seized cables and contact bars that belong to a rail agency weighing 184 kg. The driver who was transporting the cables from the Karoo was arrested in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act.

All suspects will appear in the Good Wood Magistrate’s court once they have been charged.
