Water and Sanitation on decrease of Limpopo Province’s dam levels

Limpopo dam levels have somewhat subsided

A weekly report on dam levels issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation in Limpopo has shown a slight decrease of the province’s dam levels from last week’s 88.7% to 88.3% this week. During a similar period last year, the province’s overall storage capacity stood at 84.7%.

This minimal decline means that the available water in the province as of this week is at 1307 cubic metres out of a full capacity of 1480.1 cubic metres.

The Polokwane Water Supply System with dams supplying water to Polokwane and surrounding areas is currently at 101.6%, a minimal drop from last week’s 102%. This is, however, a great improvement compared to last year at this time when the system stood at 91.4%.

Despite the overall decrease, several dams have slightly increased. Vlugkraal Dam increased from 98.6.9% last week to 100.0% this week. Doorndraai Dam also increased from 99.7% last week, to 100% this week. Nzhelele Dam also shown a slight improvement, from 100.4% last week to 100.5% this week.

Glen Alpine Dam remained the same at 100.2%. Luphephe and Nwanedzi Dams also remained the same at 100.8% and 100.3% respectively.

Nandoni Dam has dropped from 101.5% last week to 101.4%. Vondo Dam also slightly decreased, it was 100.9% last week and this week it is at 100.6%. Houtrivier Dam also slightly dropped from 91.5% last week to 91.1%. Mokolo Dam was 100.9% last week, and this week it is standing at 100.8%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has reiterated its call to residents to continue using water sparingly. The communities are also encouraged to report any water leaks and water infrastructure vandalism to local municipalities.
