Bangkok: The Prime Minister has declined to confirm whether he will visit the southern border provinces amid a series of recent violent incidents. Despite addressing the violence in these areas, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has not clarified his plans to personally visit the affected regions.
According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister, after discussions with security agencies, has initiated procedures and issued instructions to handle the situation. He has directed the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPC) to set up an operations center and deploy teams to support affected citizens, ensuring they receive assistance and compensation. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of providing swift and comprehensive access to legal rights for those directly affected, their families, and vulnerable groups. A hotline, 1880, has also been established for public inquiries regarding rights and compensation.
Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, voiced his concerns over the ongoing violence in the southern provinces, criticizing the government's policies as being too brief and lacking clear direction. He highlighted the need for comprehensive security mechanisms and policy approaches, noting that the military and security forces are doing their best but require clear policy signals from the leadership. The Democrat Party plans to coordinate with the leading opposition party to request an urgent interpellation, urging the Prime Minister to provide clarity and prevent misleading signals.
In related developments, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has temporarily closed the railway line between Maruebo and Tanyongmas stations in Narathiwat province due to an explosion that damaged the tracks. Although there were no reported injuries or fatalities, train schedules have been adjusted, with some trains diverted or cancelled.
