Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri Becomes Morocco’s First Female Head of Government

Hanoi:Morocco has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as its first female head of government, marking a significant milestone in the nation's political history and its ongoing efforts to enhance women's participation in public life.

According to Sierra Leone News Agency, King Mohammed VI appointed El Mansouri on September 29, following the 2026 legislative elections, and tasked her with forming a new government. She is the coordinator of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM).

Her appointment follows more than two decades of reforms aimed at expanding women's rights and roles in Moroccan society. A key reform occurred in 2004 with changes to the Family Code, or Moudawana, to strengthen women's legal status within the family.

The 2011 Constitution furthered gender equality, ensuring equal rights and freedoms for men and women and committing the state to work towards gender parity. The political landscape has also evolved, with more women holding senior positions within state institutions. Notably, Zoulikha Nasri became the first female royal adviser during King Mohammed VI's reign.

Economic participation has been bolstered since 2005 through the National Initiative for Human Development, which supports training and income-generating activities for women. Political representation has improved, with 96 women securing seats in the House of Representatives in the 2021 elections, a significant increase from the two women in 1993.

El Mansouri's appointment underscores the centrality of women's political representation in Morocco's institutional transition. Her immediate task is forming a new government and addressing priorities from the 2026 elections, which contested 395 seats in the House of Representatives.

This development reflects the gradual increase of women's roles in Moroccan public institutions, although parity has not yet been achieved. For future generations, El Mansouri's appointment is a step towards broader participation and the effective governance of the new administration.

Morocco's political evolution blends continuity with gradual change, with El Mansouri's appointment adding a new chapter and placing responsibility on her to transform historic representation into practical governance.
