Matric Exams Adjusted for South African Elections

Pretoria:The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination timetable has been revised to accommodate the upcoming Local Government Elections in South Africa. The exams will pause from November 3 to November 5 and are set to resume on November 6. Additionally, November 9 has been scheduled as a non-examination day.

According to South African Government News Agency, the adjustments are aimed at minimizing disruptions from election-related activities, including political gatherings and community protests. Umalusi Chief Executive Officer Mafu Rakometsi highlighted during a briefing that such measures were similarly taken in 2021 to ensure the smooth conduct of examinations amid elections.

Rakometsi emphasized the collaborative efforts required from assessment bodies, provincial education departments, and other stakeholders to prevent election activities from interfering with the examination process. He also urged political and community leaders, along with principals, teachers, and parents, to help minimize disruptions near schools serving as examination centers.

The NSC examinations began nationwide on October 13, 2026, and Umalusi continues to stress the importance of supporting candidates during this critical phase of their education to avoid any undue disadvantages stemming from election-related activities.
