Voter Roll Inspection Period Ends as 2026 Local Elections Approach

Pretoria: Ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections on 4 November, the voters' roll closes today. On 11 August, the Commission made the provisional voters' roll available for inspection at its national, provincial, and local offices, initiating the period for lodging objections to the provisional voters' roll.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Electoral Commission will review all objections and inform objectors of its decisions by 24 August 2026. The Chief Electoral Officer is set to certify the final voters' roll for the upcoming elections on 26 August 2026. Once certified, the voters' roll will be published, and electronic copies will be distributed to all certified election contestants.

Earlier this month, the Electoral Commission expressed its approval of the election date proclamation by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa. The official announcement has set Wednesday, 4 November 2026, as Election Day, marking the start of the country's 89-day Election Timetable leading up to the elections. This timetable was confirmed by Electoral Commission Chairperson Commissioner Mosotho Moepya, emphasizing the importance of formalizing the election schedule.
