Umalusi Confirms Readiness for 2026 Year-End Exams

Pretoria:Umalusi CEO Dr. Mafu Rakometsi has confirmed the readiness of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Independent Examinations Board (IEB), and South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) to administer the 2026 year-end examinations.

According to South African Government News Agency, the state of readiness was discussed during a media briefing led by Rakometsi. Approximately 1,079,879 candidates are set to take the General Education and Training Certificate Adult Basic Education and Training (GETC ABET), National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)] Level 4, and National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Umalusi conducted an audit of preparedness from 24 August to 30 September 2026, with exams starting on 13 October.

The audit evaluated various aspects, including candidate registration and staffing at examination and marking centers, external moderation of assessments and question papers, and security measures for printing and distribution of question papers. Rakometsi expressed satisfaction with the overall readiness, noting that while some concerns remain, they are being addressed and do not threaten the credibility of the exams.

Umalusi has also conducted external moderation of all assessment tasks and question papers, ensuring their fairness and reliability. The assessment bodies have submitted final subject entries, with about 92% of candidates registered for the NSC. Necessary concessions have been granted to eligible candidates, and examination centers have been evaluated, with risk levels assessed.

Examination materials are in the process of being printed, with security protocols in place. Umalusi confirmed that the marking personnel are adequately prepared, although there were initial concerns about shortages in Afrikaans Home Language, English Home Language, and History. The process for finalizing marker appointments for the DHET will conclude by 19 October.

Umalusi will oversee the examination process, from writing to marking, to ensure accuracy and reliability. Following the exams, results will be approved in compliance with regulatory standards to maintain the credibility of Umalusi-issued certificates.

Dr. Rakometsi wished the candidates well, encouraging them to approach the exams with confidence and integrity as they complete their educational journey.
