Pretoria:As South Africa approaches the Local Government Elections (LGE) scheduled for November 4, citizens are being urged to actively report misinformation to protect the integrity of election-related news. The public can report any suspicious content directly to the Electoral Commission's designated Real411 platform.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Electoral Commission has established a robust partnership with major technology companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, and Moxii Africa, to counter disinformation ahead of the elections. This partnership aims to ensure voters receive credible and accurate information, enhancing the integrity of the democratic process.
The Real411 platform offers a structured process for handling complaints submission with evidence, review by the Digital Complaints Committee, a decision on appropriate action, notification of outcomes, and an option for appeal. The public is encouraged to correct misinformation by sharing verified outcomes with others to maintain election credibility.
The Electoral Commission has also gazetted the Electoral Code of Conduct Countering Disinformation, providing enforcement measures against violations. Tech partners are enhancing this framework by using in-app tools and fact-checking networks to direct voters to authoritative resources, ensuring an informed election experience.
In addition to policy and platform agreements, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is developing advanced tools to combat AI-generated fake media. These tools are designed to assist fact-checkers in managing the high volume of digital content, prioritizing potentially problematic content for further investigation.
The partnership and technological initiatives underscore a coordinated effort across institutions, technology platforms, and civil society to protect voters from misinformation, ensuring a credible democratic process in South Africa.
