South African Institutions and Communities Called to Safeguard Living Heritage

Pretoria:With the conclusion of Heritage Month, the South African government has urged institutions and communities to collaborate in preserving the nation's heritage, ensuring the recognition of its diverse histories, languages, and traditions.

According to South African Government News Agency, Government Communication and Information System Deputy Director-General Michael Currin emphasized the significance of South Africa's shared heritage, describing it as a living resource that fosters social cohesion, strengthens identity, and supports nation-building. He noted that Heritage Day, part of South Africa's nation-building efforts, celebrates different cultural identities while promoting unity and mutual respect.

Currin highlighted the role of respectful partnerships between institutions and communities in fostering trust and a shared sense of national belonging. He mentioned that universities, museums, heritage sites, archives, and cultural organizations play a crucial role in preserving knowledge and living heritage for future generations. Community media also plays a vital role by documenting local histories, amplifying indigenous languages, and providing platforms for communities to share their stories.

A dialogue titled 'South Africa's Heritage as a Key Milestone: Institutions and Society' encouraged reflection on heritage and society's role in shaping a shared national future. Currin remarked on the rich diversity of South Africa's cultures and traditions, which contribute to its national identity. He expressed excitement about the evolving identities and connections being formed by young South Africans, which are shaping the nation's future.

This year's Heritage Month theme was 'Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us.' Media Development and Diversity Agency CEO Shoeshoe Qhu expressed concern over the limited media coverage of South Africa's diverse cultures, particularly on digital platforms. She urged mainstream media to play a more significant role in preserving cultural heritage by telling more stories about the country's traditions and communities.

Currin concluded by stating that Heritage Month provides an opportunity for South Africans to explore their heritage, deepen their collective identity, and build stronger communities. It serves as a unifying platform to celebrate cultural diversity and the enduring values of Ubuntu, contributing to nation-building and inclusive development.
