Social Development Minister Calls for Enhanced Protection of Older Persons’ Rights

Mangaung:Social Development Minister Dina Pule has made a strong call for enhanced measures to protect the rights of older persons against abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination. Speaking at the official opening of the 2026 National Active Ageing Programme at the Dr Petrus Rantlai Molemela Stadium, Pule emphasized the need to uphold the dignity and rights of senior citizens through ongoing efforts.

According to South African Government News Agency, Pule highlighted that protecting and promoting older persons' rights is not merely an act of charity but a constitutional responsibility rooted in legislation and the country's commitment to human dignity, equality, and social justice.

The National Active Ageing Programme, which includes the National Golden Games and the Older Persons Choir Festival, aims to promote healthy ageing and social participation among senior citizens from all nine provinces. Pule stressed that while the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006 provides a legislative framework for protecting older persons, continuous collaboration between government, civil society, families, and communities is essential.

Pule urged for the strengthening of legislative and policy frameworks and advocated for improved access to care and support services. She emphasized that older persons must be included in decisions affecting their lives and should not be seen merely as recipients of social assistance but as active contributors to society.

The Minister also encouraged municipalities and local community structures to sustain active-ageing initiatives throughout the year. She called on eligible senior citizens to participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections, reinforcing their right to engage in democratic processes and contribute to community decisions.
