Ekurhuleni:President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for increased investment in teachers and stronger support for educators, emphasizing that better educational outcomes rely on creating conditions where teachers can focus on their primary role of teaching.
According to South African Government News Agency, addressing the 26th National Teaching Awards at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, President Ramaphosa highlighted the central role of teachers in transforming the education system and developing the country. He stated the need to attract talented young people to teaching, support new teachers, and enable experienced educators to continue improving their skills.
The President stressed that teaching should be regarded as one of the most respected professions and that the government must provide appropriate school infrastructure, reduce administrative burdens, and ensure continuous professional development. Overcrowding, protection of teaching time, and addressing violence and disruption in schools were also identified as critical issues.
Reflecting on his personal educational experience, President Ramaphosa recalled his former school principal, Mr. Ntsandeni, who played a pivotal role in his education by recognizing his potential and preventing his expulsion. He emphasized the importance of teachers who see and nurture the promise in young people.
President Ramaphosa underscored the ultimate purpose of educational excellence is to improve life chances for every learner. He identified foundational literacy and numeracy as national priorities, warning of the difficulties faced by children who cannot read with understanding early in their education. He urged educational stakeholders to focus on improving learning outcomes and sharing best practices across regions.
The President also addressed the impact of technology on education, noting that while it offers resources and support, it cannot replace the essential human connection provided by teachers. He emphasized the importance of teaching students to use technology responsibly.
Highlighting school safety, President Ramaphosa called for educators and the community to combat gender-based violence and emphasized the role of education in promoting respect and resolving conflict without violence. He advocated for comprehensive life-skills education supported by various community figures.
Honoring educators, the President acknowledged the National Teaching Awards, which recognize excellence across education phases and subjects. He mentioned the historical role of teachers during apartheid, noting their courage and contributions to the struggle for justice, and emphasized the ongoing importance of teachers in shaping South Africa's future.
President Ramaphosa congratulated the award recipients and expressed gratitude to educators for their dedication to developing the nation. This year's awards were themed "Uniting for Excellence: Elevating Achievement, Empowering Educators to Shape South Africa's Future."
President Ramaphosa also highlighted the Minister's Special Award, #MyTeacher, which allows learners to nominate teachers who have made a difference in their lives. He also congratulated all finalists and nominees, saying reaching the national adjudication stage was itself recognition of their contribution.
