Midrand:The Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, has been actively involved in ensuring smooth operations for the upcoming Local Government Elections. He met with Electoral Commission Commissioners at the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) National Results Operations Centre, located at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, to discuss the progress of special voting and operational arrangements.
According to South African Government News Agency, the meeting took place on the final day designated for special voting in the 2026 Local Government Elections. Special Voting is an essential mechanism designed to accommodate registered voters unable to attend polling stations due to physical infirmity, disability, or other personal reasons.
The Acting Minister was joined by Deputy Ministers Dr Polly Boshielo of Police and Andries Nel of Justice and Constitutional Development. Their visit coincided with recent arrests related to election incidents, as law enforcement authorities emphasized zero tolerance towards actions undermining the electoral process's integrity.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) is actively enhancing security measures to ensure a safe and secure Voting Day. The Police Ministry has reassured citizens of its commitment, in partnership with the IEC and other stakeholders, to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Earlier, the Electoral Commission condemned acts of intimidation, disruption, and damage to election materials, signaling its intention to pursue legal action against those responsible. The Commission highlighted an increase in prohibited conduct and criminal behavior from some political party supporters and candidates, including intimidation of election officials and interference with voting processes.
