Limpopo Police Warns Against Sharing Misleading Election Content on Social Media

Baku:Limpopo The South African Police Service (SAPS) Limpopo Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, has issued a warning to the public about the dangers of circulating outdated videos, pictures, and misleading information on social media. These materials are often falsely presented as current incidents related to the ongoing electoral processes.

According to South African Government News Agency, Scheepers emphasized the need to discourage the spread of misinformation as it can cause unnecessary panic and conflict, potentially leading to negative labels for individuals and communities. He urged citizens to avoid sharing content that could incite violence and intolerance, highlighting the importance of acting responsibly to maintain peace and stability.

The warning comes as South Africans participate in the Local Government Elections, where they are voting for representatives to municipal councils. These elections are crucial as they determine who will represent wards and municipalities and who will be responsible for delivering essential services.

Scheepers further noted that the police are actively monitoring social media platforms and are prepared to respond quickly to any posts or messages intended to incite violence, promote intolerance, or disrupt peace and stability in the province. He also warned that anyone found using social media to incite violence or engage in unlawful activities would face legal consequences.
