Pretoria:The Technical Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration (IMC) has conducted productive discussions with several civic formations to address concerns about law enforcement gaps related to irregular migration and preparations for the forthcoming local government elections.
According to South African Government News Agency, the meeting, held on Sunday, included representatives from Hlangana Mzansi, Bhinca Nation led by Ngizwe Mchunu, and Gauteng IziNduna, representing communities from KwaZulu-Natal. The discussions highlighted the importance of the local government elections scheduled between November 2 and 4, 2026, and emphasized the need for South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Home Affairs Director-General Livhuwani Tommy Makhode stressed that every individual must have the constitutional right to vote, with no one obstructing this process. Ngizwe Mchunu reiterated the necessity for all to participate in voting without interference.
The conversations addressed several issues including gaps in law enforcement, the impact of a Constitutional Court judgment, irregular migration, gun smuggling, and broader crime and violence challenges. The IMC acknowledged these concerns and confirmed the ongoing implementation of the government's Five-Point Plan to enhance law enforcement, border security, combat organized crime, and restore public confidence in the rule of law.
Key commitments from the engagement involved focusing on the issues raised, strengthening coordination among law enforcement and security agencies, and establishing ongoing engagements for safer communities. Both parties pledged to counter criminal elements exploiting community protests and to promote respect for the rule of law, social cohesion, and peaceful civic participation.
The IMC appreciated the civic groups' call for South Africans to participate in the elections and reject violence and intimidation undermining democratic processes. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to constructive partnerships and actions to improve safety and well-being across South Africa.
