Addo:In a move aimed at promoting economic transformation and inclusivity, the South African Government has backed the establishment of a new wellness facility at Addo Elephant National Park. The Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the National Empowerment Fund, has helped to launch the Epitome Spa & Wellness Centre, which is set to create sustainable employment opportunities for local communities while boosting tourism in the Eastern Cape.
According to South African Government News Agency, the spa was founded by Lucia Ratshivhadelo, an industry expert who leveraged her academic qualifications to create a commercial enterprise within one of South Africa’s flagship conservation areas. The facility is entirely owned and operated by young black female leadership, generating 36 jobs, including 20 short-term construction positions and 16 permanent roles.
The project received financial support through a joint initiative by the National Empowerment Fund and the Tourism Transformation Fund, ensuring the spa's construction was completed ahead of the summer season. Deputy Minister of Tourism Maggie Sotyu highlighted the importance of translating tourism growth into tangible opportunities for South Africans, noting the sector's continued growth with 7.5 million international tourists visiting the country between January and August this year.
NEF CEO Mziwabantu Dayimani emphasized the significance of strategic funding in transitioning technical skills to commercial ownership, particularly for young entrepreneurs like Ratshivhadelo. He noted the necessity of overcoming capital access barriers to enable sustainable enterprises that support livelihoods.
Lucia Ratshivhadelo, holding a B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Science, expressed her commitment to combining professional wellness services with exceptional guest experiences. She hopes her journey inspires other young women to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions.
