Pattani: General Saraphet Chan-o-cha has mandated an urgent assessment of damage caused by recent unrest in the southern provinces, emphasizing the need for prompt government funding for compensation and recovery efforts. The general's visit to Pattani was aimed at overseeing the situation, evaluating the extent of the damage, and offering support to both officials and the local community.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Minister of Transport Mr. Sanphet Bunyamanee also visited Pattani Province to evaluate the damage resulting from the unrest that erupted on the night of August 22nd. He was accompanied by several key figures, including Ms. Patima Sadiyamu, Governor of Pattani Province, and Members of Parliament for various constituencies in Pattani. The delegation's visit was in response to reports of simultaneous attacks in multiple locations across the southern border provinces, with the objective of gaining firsthand information and understanding the situation.
Mr. Sanphet's first stop was the Bang Khao Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Nong Chik District, where attackers had set fire to government vehicles, including a fire truck and a garbage truck, which are crucial for community services. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Authorities are in the process of collecting evidence to track down those responsible. The minister and his team also inspected a 7-Eleven store in Yaharing District, another site targeted during the unrest. Perpetrators had evacuated the store's occupants before detonating explosives and setting fire to the building, causing extensive damage.
The unrest on the night of August 22nd resulted in 51 incidents across 21 districts in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces, as summarized by the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command. These incidents included bombings, arson, and the destruction of public and private property.
Mr. Sanphet emphasized the significance of his visit in understanding the real impact of the unrest on both government and private sectors. He highlighted the urgent need for agencies to evaluate the damage, support the affected individuals, and ensure the swift resumption of essential public services.
He instructed the Governor of Pattani Province to conduct a thorough survey of damages across various sites, preparing a detailed assessment to secure funding for repairs and compensation. Mr. Sanphet also directed the Ministry of Transport to maintain close coordination with relevant agencies to address and mitigate the impact on transportation and infrastructure promptly.
