Gauteng Launches Vul’amathuba Festival to Tackle Unemployment

Johannesburg:The Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) have launched the Vul'amathuba festival at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for skills training, employment, and development for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through an online platform.

According to South African Government News Agency, Deputy Director-General for Economic Planning at the GDED, Bulumko Nelana, highlighted that the campaign is designed to address unemployment challenges in the province by connecting opportunity seekers with employers. The platform increases visibility for available opportunities, potentially impacting Gauteng's unemployment rate positively as the festival expands annually.

The campaign aims to tackle two major challenges: reducing the unemployment rate, which would bring socio-economic benefits, and providing a platform for easier access to upskilling, employment, and MSME development opportunities. Nelana noted that the campaign has secured commitments from various partners, including major corporations and educational institutions, to ensure long-term placement sustainability.

Confirmed partners for the 2026 event include Microsoft, Samsung, Uber, Takealot, McDonald's, Tiger Brands, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank, UNISA, University of Johannesburg, and multiple TVET colleges and SETAs such as FoodBEV, Bank SETA, MERSETA, and AgriSETA. The campaign also emphasizes reaching marginalized youth through deliberate outreach strategies and information sharing via IGR structures.

Within the Vul'amathuba festival, there will be a citizen's central zone where government departments will provide information on MSME support programs and compliance standards. The overall success of Vul'amathuba will be judged by its impact on participants' lives, enhancing their livelihoods and socio-economic status by facilitating connections with opportunity providers.
