Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner welcomes life sentence for rape

QONCE – The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has welcomed the life sentence that was handed down on Wednesday, 30 November 2022 by the Maluti Regional Court in a rape case that occurred in Maluti a year ago.

 

According to the testimony, on Thursday, 28 October 2021 around 15:00, the victim (45), who is a disabled woman found herself in a devastating and vulnerable situation, after the accused, Simphiwe Khwababa (40), stormed into her home and raped her.  The sentence comes after an oral and forensic evidence connected Khwababa to the crime. The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of rape.

 

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mene in welcoming the sentence, added that, “sentences such as this motivates and assist towards rebuilding the confidence of our communities in the justice system.  This sentence will also serve as a deterrent to those, who think committing crime is the way to go”, added Lt Gen Mene.
