Eastern Cape Farmers Receive R1.5 Million Equipment Boost to Enhance Production

Port St Johns:Farmers at Mgxabakazi Farming are poised to enhance their agricultural production and expand operations following a significant investment of R1.5 million in farming equipment by the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture.

According to South African Government News Agency, Eastern Cape Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe presented a new tractor, trailer, and agricultural implements to the farm located in Mthombo village. The farmers expressed their gratitude with ululations, dancing, and embraces as they welcomed the much-needed resources.

Co-owner of the farm, Mluleki Jico, highlighted that the equipment will significantly improve production, minimize operational delays, and strengthen their business. He noted that the new equipment addresses previous challenges related to hiring tractors, which often delayed the production of green mealies and vegetables.

Jico also called on the government to maintain its investment in farmers, emphasizing that visible support helps overcome operational challenges and enhances their chances of success. Mgxabakazi Farming is a collaborative initiative involving Jicholas Investments and Tita Ka Pelane Trading Enterprise, operating under a communal land tenure system. The farm spans approximately 52 hectares, with 34 hectares dedicated to producing green mealies and vegetables under irrigation.

The Department of Agriculture has further supported the farm with irrigation infrastructure to boost production. The project contributes to local economic development by providing permanent employment for 20 people and creating up to 40 seasonal job opportunities for local youth and women.

MEC Kontsiwe praised the farmers for their collaborative efforts in utilizing communal land productively, particularly in a region where land rights disputes are prevalent. She appreciated the intergenerational aspect of the farming initiative, as agricultural knowledge and practices have been passed down through generations.

In addition to her visit to Mgxabakazi Farming, Kontsiwe also attended events at Swazini in Qhaka village and the OR Tambo Agricultural Show. At Swazini, she officially opened a Fresh Produce Rural Market Centre to improve market access for local farmers. The agricultural show featured competitions that encourage farmers to enhance the quality of their produce and livestock through constructive feedback.

MEC Kontsiwe reaffirmed the department's commitment to supporting emerging farmers in building sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises that contribute to food security, employment, and local economic growth.
