Duo appear in court for attempted murder and robbery

POTCHESFTROOM – Two suspects Kingsley Moda (35) and Isaac Bogatsu (40), appeared before the Sannieshof Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 1 December 2022, in connection with cases of two attempted murder and robbery with aggregating circumstances.

 

The suspects’ court appearance came after they were arrested on Tuesday, 29 November 2022, at Witpan, Sannieshof, after they allegedly robbed and assaulted a shop owner. Initial reports indicated that Moda and Bogatsu also tried to hijack a commercial truck that was delivering maize meal at Deelpan in Sannieshof. According to allegations the two suspects shot several times towards the truck, but the truck driver managed to escape unharmed from the incident.

 

It is alleged that a community member, who saw the suspects robbing a shop, reported the matter to the police, who responded immediately and traced the BMW vehicle allegedly used by the suspects to flee the scene. Police intercepted the vehicle and the suspects were arrested.  The two suspects are expected to reappear before the same court on Monday, 12 December 2022 for bail application.

 

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, appreciated the community for working together with the police in making sure that the two suspects were arrested.

Duo sentenced for theft of copper cable

FREE STATE – Two accused, Johannes Phepeng (46) and Hartlife Mharadzi (36) were found guilty and sentenced by Sasolburg Regional Court on charges of theft of copper cable,on Thursday, 01 December 2022.

 

Their conviction emanates from the incident that occurred on the 25 December 2021, where police from K9 Unit in Sasolburg were conducting patrol duties, when they noticed a suspicious white Hyundai H100 with registration number JL90CMGP with three occupants. They stopped the vehicle and searched it wherein Transnet copper cable to the value of R150 000-00 was found.

 

The suspects were then arrested and the case was handed over to the Hawk’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Sasolburg for further investigation.

 

The two accused were sentenced to pay a fine of R30 000-00 or to undergo five years imprisonment. Both the accused were declared unfit to possess the firearms.

City of Johannesburg employees in court for water and electricity accounts fraud

GAUTENG – Khulani Lloyd Mthombeni (32), Margaret Dorothy Amelia De Kock (56), and Bradley Mark Waksman (56), were arrested on Monday, 28 November 2022, following a Hawks’ Serious Corruption investigation that started in February 2022.

This follows an internal probe by the City of Johannesburg (COJ), after allegations of altering water and electricity accounts by the pair were brought to the city’s attention. The Hawks investigation has revealed that through this scheme the pair deprived the COJ of over R 220 000 in revenue which they pocketed over a period of time from August 2021.

The trio appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, 29 November 2022. They were granted bail of R5000 each. The case was postponed to 16 February 2023, for disclosure of docket contents.

Master of the High Court fraudster in the dock

GAUTENG – Tebogo Jacob Sebilwane (40) and Keamogetswe Ricardo Mabuza (37), appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday for alleged late estate fraud.

A case of fraud against the pair was registered at Johannesburg Central during May 2018. The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime investigation has culminated in the recent arrest of the pair.

It is alleged that the duo fraudulently obtained letters of executorship from the Master of the High Court and consequently sold the house of a deceased person for R280 000 which they pocketed. The children of the deceased reportedly knew nothing about the transaction and laid criminal charges against the pair. Following a lengthy investigation the pair was apprehended on Friday, 23 November 2022.

They appeared on the same day in the Palridge Regional Court and were granted R2000 bail each. The case was postponed to the 24 of January 2023 for legal aid.

Suspect due in court for illegal possession of ivory tusks

MPUMALANGA: A 39-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Calcutta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 01 December 2022 after he was arrested by the Hawks Nelspruit based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, White River K9 and MTPA during search and seizure operation conducted on Wednesday, 30 November 2022 at Cork Trust under Bushbuckridge policing area.

The arrest followed after information about illegal poaching was received.  The team proceeded to the identified address where during the search, two elephant tusks were found and seized. The suspect was arrested and charged under section 22 on the Mpumalanga Nature Conservation Act 10/1998 possession of ivory. The suspect was detained pending his first court appearance on Thursday, 01 December 2022.

Business robbery suspects heading for court

Integrated efforts by Kirstenhof and Diepriver SAPS and private security companies landed three suspects behind bars following a business robbery at a filling station in Kirstenhof on Wednesday morning. The suspects’ vehicle was followed by the security company and was stopped in Diepriver. The vehicle was searched and a 9mm pistol and an undisclosed amount of cash was found in the vehicle. Three males between the ages of 32 and 36 were arrested on charges of business robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges.

Atlantis Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 24-year-old male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition when they responded to a shooting incident in Sterrechance Road, Atlantis on Wednesday morning. The suspect was searched and found in possession of a 9mm pistol with ammunition. The members also followed up information given by the community and found a 9mm pistol and a homemade zip gun abandoned in a yard. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it were used in other serious crimes.

The suspect will appear in the Atlantis Magistrates’ court on Friday, 2 December 2022.
