Bhalisela ukufumana indlu: City encourages housing registration

Today, 29 November 2022, the City’s Portfolio Chairperson of the Human Settlement Committee, Councillor Anda Ntsodo, and portfolio committee members visited a housing registration drive at the Weltevreden Valley Community Centre in Samora Machel in an effort to educate the community about the processes related to the Housing Needs Register and housing opportunities.

Residents were encouraged to register on the Housing Needs Register, check their status online and to update their personal details so that qualifying beneficiaries can be informed about available housing opportunities.

‘I was pleased to see the number of residents who visited the registration drive today. The purpose of the initiative is to educate our residents about the City’s processes and answer their questions about the Housing Needs Register and housing opportunities so that they are empowered with the necessary information to make informed decisions.

‘Residents are encouraged to register with the City’s Housing Needs Register to be considered for housing opportunities which become available. Beneficiaries of all City housing projects are allocated in accordance with the City’s Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure that opportunities are provided to qualifying applicants in a fair, transparent and equitable manner, and to prevent queue-jumping.

‘Residents are urged to visit the City’s website for more details about the various types of housing opportunities and to check their status on the Register. They may also send an SMS to check their status. Simply SMS your 13-digit ID number, followed by a space and your surname, to 44108. Residents are reminded that we are always available to offer advice and assistance,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.

The City offers five main affordable housing opportunities. Each opportunity has specific qualifying criteria:

·         GAP

·         Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP)

·         Community Residential Units (CRU)

·         Social Housing developed and managed by Social Housing Institutions (SHIs) as per the Social Housing Act and the requirements of the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA)

Residents were reminded that applicants need to meet the following criteria in order to register with the Housing Needs Register:

·         be a South African citizen or permanent resident of South Africa

·         be over 18 years old

·         be married or be a co-habiting partner, or else have dependants (This does not apply to applicants over the age of 60 or who have disabilities)
