The Gugulethu Meat Market is a City-owned facility with about 45 traders and several shops, and is a popular hub for members of the local community.

A two-day leadership workshop with traders from the meat market was held at the Fezeka Municipal Offices on 21 and 22 April 2021. Traders who indicated that they were interested in serving as part of a representative association were invited to attend the workshop which was aimed at empowering the participants about how to form and manage an informal sector association.

‘Informal sector associations play an important and valuable role in the City – both in representing the interests of traders in engagements with the City and other stakeholders, and in improving services to traders,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management during the ceremony.

Training topics included the role and responsibilities of executive members, governance, effective communication and financial management.

‘I have learnt that it is important to understand the people I work with and get to know the customers in my community. I have learnt about how to interact with customers. I must show love and smile all the time. We have also been taught how to boost our business during this time of Covid-19, using social network platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp groups to advertise our products,’ said trader Nobantu Kedama.

‘I want to thank the informal traders for participating in this leadership training. The City is looking forward to working with a Gugulethu Meat Market association to improve the management of the market and make it a more attractive environment for traders and their customers,’ said Alderman Twigg.

The training was organised by the City of Cape Town’s Urban Management Directorate, through its Area Economic Development Branch. This training is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger and more sustainable informal sector leadership and improve the communication and collaboration between informal sector associations and the City of Cape Town.
