The Youths Actions for Restless Development Organization (YARDO SL) held a symposium on October 4 at the Africell-American Corner on Bathurst Street, Freetown, to enhance youth participation in strengthening education in Sierra Leone.
In his keynote address, Emmanuel J. Momoh, Esq., Director of Technical and Higher Education, emphasized the government’s strategic plan for promoting quality education from 2022 to 2026. He highlighted that the plan reflects the government’s commitment to improving education through significant contributions from bilateral and multilateral donors, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and organizations like the World Bank and UNICEF.
Momoh stressed that youth involvement is critical in ensuring a sustainable future, urging young people and students to participate in educational planning processes actively. He noted that the school-age population in Sierra Leone has reached 4.1 million, with a significant percentage of girls and youth living in rural areas
facing challenges such as food insecurity.
“Education is not just about affordability; it is a matter of social justice and human rights,” said Momoh, emphasizing the importance of involving youth in decision-making to safeguard the country’s future.
YARDO SL was praised for fostering engagement among young people and advocating for their inclusion in educational planning, ensuring their voices are heard in shaping Sierra Leone’s educational landscape.
