PARKTOWN – The relentless efforts of police to ensure that victims of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide get justice, continue to bare fruits.

This week, a 55-year-old woman received a life sentence for raping a 21-year-old mentally challenged man at his house in Krugersdorp.

The woman was hired to be a caregiver to the victim. She raped the victim and sexually assaulted him while the parents were not home. The matter was reported by a neighbour after the victim told him about his ordeal.

She was found guilty by Krugerdorp Regional Court and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and six year for sexual assault. The sentences will run concurrently.

In another incident, 30-year-old, Ntshabeleng Graider Komane was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping a 22-year-old woman.

On the evening of 20 August 2021, Komane requested the victim to accompany him to his friend’s house at Etwatwa. On arrival at the place there was no one. Komane forced the victim into the house where he raped her at knife point.

He was found guilty and sentenced on 24 November 2021 by Benoni Regional Court.

The Provincial Commissioner in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the investigating officers for the sterling investigations that ensured perpetrators stay behind bars. “I am pleased with this sentences as victims will now be safe and comforted that the perpetrators are out of the society”. The Provincial Commissioner also assured the public that SAPS in Gauteng is determined and dedicated in fighting crimes committed against woman and children. “We stand firm in the fight against GBVF. With this period declared 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children we will intensify our campaigns which we conduct throughout the year”, reiterated Lt Gen Mawela
