Cape Town: Despite increasing to 480 the number of schools where the Western Cape Government (WCG) subsidised holiday security, the province has seen a rise in burglary and vandalism cases during this period. During the summer holidays, 47 incidents of burglary or vandalism were reported by 34 schools.
According to South African Government News Agency, this marks a significant increase from the 26 incidents reported at 24 schools during the same period the previous year. While most incidents were minor, they have proven costly to schools, affecting both the financial resources needed for replacements and the overall functionality of the institutions.
Items damaged or stolen include electrical fixtures, appliances, food for learners, bathroom fixtures, fencing and security equipment, and windows, among others. The Western Cape Education Department expressed disappointment, noting that schools will need to allocate time and resources to address these losses. They emphasized that schools are valuable community resources that require protection and care from everyone.
The provincial department has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near schools. Individuals are encouraged to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) or the Safe Schools hotline at 0800 45 46 47 if they have any information regarding the incidents. Even seemingly minor details could be crucial in helping authorities apprehend the criminals and recover stolen property.
