‘When one looks at the weekly statistics, a few things stand out, namely the drunk driving arrests which are still quite high, but also the number of domestic violence and assault incidents reported to the PECC. The City responds to these incidents where resources allow, but it is very disheartening to see how many people refuse to lay charges when officers arrive on scene. In the past week, Metro Police officers responded to at least six domestic violence and abuse complaints and in half of those cases, the complainants didn’t want to lay charges. And, while we understand that the dynamics are often complex, there is very little that can be done to assist otherwise,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In the past week, Cape Town Traffic Officers arrested 57 motorists for driving under the influence, and three more for reckless and negligent driving. They issued 50 245 fines for various transgressions, impounded 33 public transport vehicles and executed 1 044 warrants of arrest.
Law enforcement officers made 128 arrests and issued 3 643 fines for various transgressions.
Metro Police officers made 40 arrests and issued 2 983 fines for traffic and by-law transgressions.
On Sunday, 8 January 2023 Metro Police Officers arrested a suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in the Bonteheuwel area.
Just before 03:25, officers conducting crime prevention patrols spotted two men on a bicycle. When the officers approached them, one threw something over a nearby gate, which turned out to be a .22 pistol with seven rounds of ammunition. One of the suspects ran away, but officers caught the other – a 22-year-old man who was detained at Bishop Lavis SAPS.
