The City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate wants to warn residents and jobseekers not to fall victim to a fake advertisement that is currently doing the rounds for Learner Law Enforcement officers.
The City advertised a vacancy in 2017 and the closing date for applications was 8 September 2017. The advert then became invalid, however, the advert is still being circulated and desperate and unsuspecting people are applying for a non-existent employment opportunity.
The fake advertisement has been sent to prospective applicants via WhatsApp. It has also been seen on Facebook pages and on job seeker platforms around Cape Town.
‘This is cruel and creates an expectation and false hope for an opportunity for employment. Unemployment in South Africa is at an all-time high and sadly, the youth who are already having difficulty securing jobs, is the target audience. It is no wonder we received approximately 2 600 applications in response to this fake advert. I want to reiterate that this advert is fake and creates absolute devastation for individuals who saw this as an opportunity to be considered for this role. I again appeal to applicants to check the details of the advert, the reference number will always indicate the current year and the closing date will be within the same time period. I also want to warn those who are circulating this advert that they are committing a crime and can be held responsible for their actions.
‘City staff are also reminded to check the validity of job adverts before forwarding them on,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.
The City’s Human Resources Department follows a recruitment process as outlined below:
- The City of Cape Town places adverts internally and/or externally depending on the nature of the vacancy. For external applicants, adverts are placed in appropriate newspapers, on the City’s website in the careers section, and other career pages such as LinkedIn.
- Internal adverts are circulated electronically through the SAP portal and the careers page. The adverts are also placed on designated notice boards at City facilities.
- Depending on the level of the position, applicants will be requested to submit their job applications online via the City’s SAP portal, or forward it to a relevant vacancies email address.
- Training and Development programme opportunities such as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), Skills development, the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG), and the Graduate Internship Programmes (GIP), can be accessed by signing into https://jobjack.co.za. Interested individuals will be required to register on the site and will then have access to register for these programmes.
We appeal to residents to report fraudulent activities to the South African Police Services to help bring the perpetrator to book.
