A 31-year-old suspected serial rapist was arrested during an early morning intelligence led operation at a block of flats on Block J2 at the Glebelands hostel in Umlazi on Tuesday, 27 August 2024.
Police were acting on intelligence which uncovered the room in which the suspect was hiding and during his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a cellphone belonging to a 26-year-old woman whom he allegedly raped in the evening of Sunday, 25 August 2024. The suspect enticed the victim on the internet and the two agreed to meet. Their first meet up led them to a sportsground at Glebelands hostel in Umlazi where the suspect reportedly became aggressive and raped the victim at knifepoint. After the rape ordeal the suspect took the woman’s cellphone and only gave her the sim card.
The suspect was wanted for a series of rape and robbery cases which he allegedly committed at the Glebelands hostel, mostly at the sportsgrounds. His first case was in December 2021 where he also connected with a 30-year-old woman
over the internet and the suspect offered the woman ironing job at his hostel room where he allegedly raped her. Ongoing investigations have thus far linked the suspect to 27 cases of rape and robbery through DNA samples.
The suspect will appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 29 August 2024.
