DURBAN – Wanted suspect Sthokoza Magaya Cele (47) appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court yesterday for murder as well as attempted murder and he was remanded in custody until 28 June 2022 for his bail application.
On 20 February 2021, 37-year-old Khulekani Elisha Langa and his two-year-old son were at his residence at Tshekane in Muden when two men who posed as customers approached them. Whilst assisting them, the suspects opened fire, fatally wounding Langa. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and his son who was shot in the arm. He was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at the Muden police station. The docket was transferred to Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation. The suspects went into hiding when they have learned about police launching a manhunt for them. On 21 June 2022, the Provincial Organised Crime Unit together with the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit received information that the suspect was traveling with friends from Matimatolo to Pietermaritzburg.
The police officers proceeded to Manchester area in Pietermaritzburg where they spotted the vehicle with three occupants. They stopped the vehicle, searched the occupants and arrested Cele for murder as well as attempted murder. Detectives are pursuing the second suspect who is still on the run.
