The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate recently refurbished Voortrekker Road between Jakes Gerwel Drive and Vasco Boulevard in Goodwood. The newly resurfaced road has been open to commuters since earlier this month. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas visited the area today to see the work the Roads Infrastructure and Management team has completed on this important section of Voortrekker Road.
The City has invested over R10 million in this project as the work entailed the relaying of isolated sections of drainage channels, and the removal and replacement of the existing asphalt surfacing.
The upgrade of these roads forms part of the City’s efforts to address road maintenance in Bellville in a planned manner. Voortrekker Road is the main corridor linking the northern suburbs to the city centre . The refurbishment of other sections of Voortrekker Road in Bellville are planned for this financial year. The City will communicate the details of these planned works closer to the time.
I want to thank the residents for their patience and cooperation while our teams carried out these works. Roadworks always come with a level of inconvenience, especially considering that this is a main road in a busy commercial district. That said, regular road maintenance prolongs the longevity of the City’s road network which is one of our most important assets as it enables the movement of people and goods, and economic activity and growth,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.
On the site visit this morning, Councillor Quintas also noticed that a stormwater cover was stolen along Voortrekker Road.
‘I was shocked to see the open hole, which is a serious hazard for pedestrians. I immediately reported this to the directorate for action. The theft of stormwater covers and other City infrastructure is a huge challenge. This is a drain on our already limited budget that should be invested in services to our residents. Also, it seriously endangers the lives of pedestrians in the area. We cannot tolerate the theft and vandalism anymore, and I ask that all residents please report stolen covers and other damaged infrastructure to the City’s Transport Information centre as soon as they notice it.
