The Victoria West Regional Court recently handed down a 10 year prison sentence to 20-year-old Wynand Morris following the attempted rape and sexual assault of a 22-year-old female victim in Victoria West on Friday, 07 April 2023. The Court heard that the victim was walking home when she was accosted by the accussed, who made sexual advances that the victim refused. The accused resorted to assaulting the victim and forced himself on her without her consent, but she managed to overpower him and fled to seek police assistance. The Court imposed a 9 year direct prison sentence, for attempted rape and 12 months for sexual assault. Both sentences will run concurrently and the accused is declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register. The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola applauded the Investigating Officer, Detective Warrant Melany Oliphant for the sterling investigation of the case and expressed her gratitude to vict ims of GBVF for breaking the silence and reporting their abusers to the police . She urged all communities to rate the police efforts by participating in the "RATE OUR SERVICE" online survey to assist the police in improving services. Source: South African Police Service
