As of 31 July 2022, 216 million people had completed the primary series (fully immunized) in the African region, representing 18.5% of the population of the Region. Three countries in the African Region exceeded the target of 70% of their populations fully immunized: Mauritius (75.3%), Seychelles (77.5%) and Rwanda (76.1%). Six countries recorded between 40% and 70% of their population having completed the primary series: Botswana (58.4%), Cabo Verde (52.4%), Comoros (46.5%), Liberia (44.8 %), Mozambique (40.0%), and Sao Tome and Principe (45.1%).
Eight countries have not yet succeeded in administering the primary series to more than 10% of their population. Burundi (0.1%), Cameroon (4.5%), Madagascar (4.5%), Malawi (7.6%), Mali (7.6%), Democratic Republic of Congo (2.6%) , and Senegal (6.3%).
Booster doses are given to fully vaccinated people in 36 of the 46 countries in the African Region (78%). Among these 36 countries, 11% of fully vaccinated people received at least one booster dose.
Data from 26 countries show that 50.4% of health workers received the primary series.
A total of 696 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered in the African Region, 66% of which through the COVAX Facility. That is 60 doses per 100 inhabitants. In all, 59% of the doses received were administered. Nineteen countries out of 46 (41%) administered less than 50% of the doses received.
