The City of Cape Town has cleared the online motor vehicle licensing backlog created by the Covid-19 pandemic hard lockdown. Turnaround times for the issuing of vehicle licence discs are now back to normal. The City urges residents to continue using the convenient online e-Services for their urgent business, where possible. When using e-Services to renew their motor vehicle registration and licence discs, residents may expect their disc on their doorstep within 10 working days.
Residents may register online and apply to renew their licence discs via the City’s e-Services. Customers may expect their discs to be on their doorstep within 10 working days, depending on the South African Post Office’s delivery time.
Customers also have the option of collecting their motor vehicle registration and licence disc themselves. They should contact the City if they prefer to collect their disc rather than receiving it in the mail.
‘The turnaround times for the issuing of licence discs are back to normal due to our officials clearing the online application backlog created by the national Covid-19 lockdown.
‘We are pleased to be issuing licences as quickly as possible and without any unnecessary delays. We continue to encourage residents to make use of our convenient and easy to use e-Services, and we urge those who have not registered to do their business online, to do so.
‘Queues may be long at our customer offices from time to time and we remind customers to always plan their visit ahead of time. Try visiting as early as possible, and if queues are too long, consider visiting at another time or rather going to another office close to your area,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.
The City continues to implement strict customer-facing Covid-19 regulations that we must adhere to.
What to expect when visiting an office:
- Covid-19 screening at the entrances. Limited number of customers allowed in at a time due to Covid-19 regulations.
- Social distancing is required and must be adhered to.
- Visit early in the day. If queues are too long, please consider returning the following day. There are longer queues due to reduced staff allowed to work in one space at the same time at some offices, as required by Covid-19 regulations.
- You only need your ID and your motor vehicle registration number to renew your disc.
- To check customer office operating hours, please visit the Operations and Service Notifications document on the City’s website or the City’s Twitter page ahead of time if unsure
