The City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg Yesterday, 2 August 2022, unveiled a new memorial wall dedicated to Urban Waste Management staff who have died in the line of duty. The memorial wall is located at the Solid Waste Collections and Drop-off in De Grendel in Parow.
Over the years, several Urban Waste Management staff have lost their lives due to illness, accidents, and natural causes. This includes the Covid-19 pandemic that has also greatly impacted the brave teams who worked on the front lines of service delivery during the two-year lockdown. Many have lost friends and colleagues due to the virus.
'I think it's fair to say that many of us can take basic services for granted at times, and that we do not realise the many risks and challenges that come with providing waste management services. The Covid-19 pandemic has however put this into focus. After this experience, we realised we needed to do more to recognise the commitment, discipline and courage and indeed sacrifice that makes service delivery possible.
'Providing waste management services to Cape Town helps protect community health so that we can live long, happy and productive lives. These brave men and women honoured on this memorial wall have paid the ultimate price so that we and future generations can thrive,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
