WHO suggested equitable access to health care by countries of the world, named Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Information revealed by the Public Health Minister shows that the UHC is in operation in the North West and South West regions.
Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie officially launched the extension voucher August 7 in Buea.
This first phase of the UHC commenced in April 2023 in the East region. It is state sponsored, meant to offer services for children 0-5 years of free consultation and treatment of uncomplicated malaria, the Ministry said.
Again, pregnant women and newborns up to 42 days of life for 6000 fcfa will benefit from antenatal consultations, childbirths (ceasarean section inclusive), and care of newborns up to 42 days .
Moreso, the UHC at this level includes free treatment for persons living with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, Onchocerciasis. People on dialysis are to pay 15000 francs down from fcfa 520, 000 for sessions in a year.
‘The UHC has come to really assist
us. There has been tremendous changes. The future was bleak because we often skipped dialysis sessions because of the cost, which has been evaded. It is a miracle!’ Pa Ojong Arrey, president of the hemodialysis patients of the hospital said.
After the official ceremony and an evaluatory visit to the Buea Road Intergrated Health Center and Buea Regional Hospital Dialysis Centre, the Member of Government expressed satisfaction at the level of compliance.
