HARRISMITH - The school learners have executed a citizen arrest between Tshiame A and B open field after two learners were allegedly robbed of two cellphones on their way back home from school. The second armed suspect was arrested later by police.
It is alleged that on Wednesday, 25 May 2022 at about 17:50 the seven learners were walking from school on their way home in a group when they were approached by two unknown males of which one was carrying a firearm. It is further alleged that one who was carrying a firearm pointed them with it and demanded their cellphones. The two learners amongst seven complied and handed two cellphones to the suspects who fled on foot in different directions. The boys in the group chased the suspect (25) who was not carrying a firearm and caught him. Therefore, someone called the police who took over from the learners. The police went further with information from learners which led to the arrest of the second suspect aged 24. He was found in possession of a toy gun and three cellphones were seized. The two suspects were arrested and charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate court on Friday, 27 May 2022.
