Two sentenced on two separate rape incidents during Women’s Month in Qwaqwa

Two men were sentenced to a total of 28 years for two separate rape incidents in Qwaqwa.

The two accused, Mpho Maseko (31) and Nakedi Daniel Tanki (30), were sentenced for rape that happened in two separate incidents in the Phuthaditjhaba policing precinct. Mpho will spend 8 years in jail for the rape of a 23-year-old victim, while Nakedi was sentenced to 20 years.

It was testified during trial that on 15 July 2023 at about 18:00, the victim was with her friend at a tarven in Setsing. That is where they met with the suspect, who went with them to another tavern in Makgalaneng Village. On arrival, Mpho bought them liquor. The victim further testified that she does not remember what happened after that, but she woke up in the morning where Mpho was staying. She then discovered that she had been raped.

In a separate incident, Nakedi Daniel Tanki was sentenced for the rape of a 26-year-old victim.

During trial, the court heard that on 1 May 2022 at about 04:00, the victim from Tebang village was sleeping together with her daughter when she heard a knock at the door. She said she asked the person knocking who he was but got no reply. The person forced the door to open and gained entry. The following morning, the victim went to the neighbor’s house and explained to them what happened during the night. The neighbors managed to identify the suspect. The suspect was traced and arrested.

Mpho Maseko’s case was investigated by Sergeant Mmapitso Mofokeng, and Nakedi Tnki’s case was investigated by Sergeant Mokotedi. They both worked tirelessly together with the National Prosecuting Authority to secure a good sentence.
