Two of the seven escapees were re-arrested after the implementation of a 72-hour activation plan since their reported escape from Makhanda Correctional Service facility on Tuesday.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, 18 October 2022 at about 04:00, the seven inmates escaped from a facility in Makhanda under circumstances, which are forming part of the investigation. The same day, a breakthrough was made when an escapee, Bennet Kwarrie was re-arrested in Bloemfontein. On Wednesday evening, 19 October 2022 around 22:00, a joint task team between the SAPS and Correctional Service officers re-arrested a second inmate in the bushes near Committees. The recaptured inmate, Simba Masinga was nabbed while hiding in the bushes. Masinga’s arrest brings down a total of escapees, who are still at large to five (05).
Police are warning the community that these escapees are dangerous and should not be approached instead police must be contacted. We also urge communities not to protect these criminals as they will be committing an offence if found to be aiding and abetting them.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of any of these escapees is urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Glen Peter on 082 301 9427 or Crime Stop or the nearest police station.
