Volkrust: Two Nigerian nationals were remanded in custody following their arrest for drug dealing in a meticulously planned operation in Volkrust, Mpumalanga. The suspects, identified as Ikemukwu Benjermin Ezirim, 39, and Christian Valentine Uchenna, 37, faced charges after being caught with drugs valued at an estimated R1.2 million.
According to South African Police Service, the arrests were the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies. The operation, which took place on Thursday, November 28, 2024, was spearheaded by the Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Serious Corruption Investigation, and Serious Commercial Crime Investigation units, with assistance from the Standerton K9 Unit and ACSU Security.
The operation was initiated following a tip-off about suspected drug dealings. Upon reaching the specified location, the suspects attempted to destroy evidence by flushing the drugs down the toilet. However, the authorities managed to apprehend them before
they could succeed. Further searches revealed additional drugs concealed within the vehicle’s body and tyres.
In addition to the drugs, authorities seized R2,000 in cash, five cellphones valued at R15,000, a silver weighing scale worth R200, and a silver Mercedes-Benz C180 estimated at R400,000. Both suspects were found to be in South Africa without valid documentation, leading to additional charges.
Appearing before the Volkrust Magistrates Court on Friday, November 29, 2024, the case was postponed to December 9, 2024, for a bail application, with the accused remaining in custody. Major General Gerber, the Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, praised the multidisciplinary team for their successful operation and expressed gratitude to community members whose information contributed to the arrests and seizures.
