PARKTOWN – Three suspects aged 34, 44 and 50 appeared in Lenasia Magistrates’ Court on 17 December 2021 for an armed robbery.
The three men were caught by community members after they broke into a taxi parked outside Tobacco Junction in Lenasia with the intention of stealing boxes of cigarettes. They were found in possession of car breaking implements and a toy gun.
A preliminary investigation linked the three to an armed robbery that occurred on 13 December 2021 in Lenasia whereby a man riding a bicycle was robbed of R20 000-00 cash. The robbery which was caught on camera went viral on social media.
All three suspects were arrested and appeared in court for armed robbery, possession of car breaking implements and malicious damage to property. They are remanded in custody for further police investigations.
The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela thanked the community members for their brave act of catching the suspects and calling the police.
The police urge public members to be vigilant and not carry large sum of cash with them but rather do electronic payments where possible.
