Transport Indaba Explores Future of Logistics in KwaZulu-Natal

Durban:KwaZulu-Natal: The future of transport and logistics in KwaZulu-Natal took center stage at the Transport Indaba, where government officials, industry experts, and policymakers discussed measures to enhance the province's role as a major trade and logistics gateway.

According to South African Government News Agency, the two-day event was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on October 1 and 2, 2026. The Indaba focused on practical solutions to improve freight, aviation, rail, maritime, and road transport to boost connectivity and support economic growth.

The Indaba is part of a 10-point plan introduced by Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma during a budget presentation. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy emphasized the strategic importance of KwaZulu-Natal as South Africa's primary gateway to sub-Saharan Africa, noting the significant role of Durban and Richards Bay ports in handling cargo.

Discussions concentrated on strengthening the rail network and shifting more freight from road to rail to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the efficiency of major freight corridors like the N3 and N2. Updates were provided on rail reform initiatives and the proposed rolling stock Leasing Company (LeaseCo), designed to modernize freight operations and attract private investment.

Aviation, maritime transport, road infrastructure, and funding models for transport infrastructure development were also discussed. eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba stressed the need to implement practical solutions and highlighted the municipality's roadmap for GO! Durban, aimed at transforming public transport and enhancing the city's competitiveness.

The Indaba reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders to collaborate and drive innovation, improve mobility, and strengthen the province's logistics and trade capabilities.
