Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager Secures Three-Year Safety Permit

Pretoria:According to South African Government News Agency, Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) has been granted a three-year safety permit by the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) after a comprehensive assessment of its safety management systems, governance, and risk management processes.

The safety permit enhances regulatory confidence in TRIM's capabilities to manage the national rail network safely and supports South Africa's rail reform program. This development marks an advancement from TRIM's initial temporary safety permit, reflecting its growth as an independent rail infrastructure manager.

TRIM emphasizes that ongoing improvement in railway safety is essential. The organization plans to continue enhancing its safety management systems, addressing operational and infrastructure risks, and working with the RSR and railway operators to maintain safety.

The milestone is crucial as South Africa's freight rail sector transitions to a more open, multi-operator environment. TRIM is pivotal in this transition, ensuring fair and non-discriminatory access to the rail network while upholding its integrity and safety.

With the entry of new Train Operating Companies (TOCs), effective safety management between TRIM and train operators is increasingly vital. A robust safety framework is necessary to support increased network participation through appropriate governance and controls.

TRIM General Manager for Safety, Andiswa Dlanga, highlighted that the safety permit underscores the importance of safety in enabling rail reform and supports the safe management of South Africa's freight logistics system.
