Three more years of Cape Town Open partnership

Council has today approved a new three-year agreement with the Southern Africa PGA Tour to continue sponsorship of the Cape Town Open.

The decision means that, pending negotiations, the City of Cape Town will provide support to one of the country’s premier golf tournaments for the 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24 financial years.

The City has been supporting the golfing tournament since the 2013/14 financial year.

Annually it features over 150 professional and amateur golfers from 30 countries.

It is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the European Challenge Tour.

‘The Cape Town Open has remained one of the mainstays of the city’s annual events calendar for the last decade and has become one of the most popular golfing tournaments in the world. Over the years, the event has provided Cape Town with many international destination marketing opportunities, has contributed to the economy through tourism spend by the visiting delegation including players and their families with their crews.

‘Additionally, the Cape Town Open has been a platform where amateur golfers cut their teeth in the big leagues and has reached hundreds of aspiring golfers from disadvantaged communities across Cape Town. We believe granting this multi-year agreement allows those involved in the planning of this event time to better plan the tournament and provide Cape Town with an even bigger opportunity to showcase what it has to offer to the world,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

The most recent tournament, hosted between April and May 2021, brought in nearly 200 international visitors and nearly 300 others from across South Africa, who collectively spent around R2 million on local accommodation, restaurants and transportation.

Furthermore, the broadcast for the tournament – which included destination images of Cape Town – reached approximately 167 million homes in 22 countries including South Africa, with an estimated value of approximately R41 million.
