DURBAN: Yesterday, police officers from the Rapid Rail Police Unit were conducting patrols at Bayhead when they noticed a bakkie and a truck stationary next to each other with three men in between both vehicles.
The men were spotted transferring diesel from the truck into the plastic containers. The police officers approached the men and established that they were stealing diesel. The bakkie was searched and police found plastic containers full of diesel as well as empty containers. The suspects were unable to provide police with a reasonable explanation for removing diesel from the truck. It was also established that the suspects were in the country illegally.
Three suspects aged between 22 and 34 were placed under arrest for theft and for contravening the Immigration Act. Police seized eight 25 litres and 30 litres containers containing diesel as well as empty containers. Police also seized the plastic pipes that were used by the suspects. The vehicle was also impounded by police for further investigation. The suspects will appear before the Durban Magistrates’ Court tomorrow on charges of theft and contravening the Immigration Act.
