Theatre comes alive for little ones

The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Branch and the Cape Town Opera hosted two sessions which brought the magic of the theatre to communities which may not otherwise experience it

Children and their caregivers from Rocklands and Delft were recently exposed to the Cape Town Opera's theatre experience called Opera Blocks.

Opera Blocks is a magical brain-boosting theatre experience for parents and babies from birth to 18 months.

Utilising the expertise of an occupational therapist, it brings music, song and play together in a calm, immersive environment that will stimulate, entertain and spark imagination in young children.

'Music is not only soothing to us all, but it can help babies with learning to understand the rhythm of speech. The Cape Town Opera is one of our grant-in-aid recipients and the funds we make available cements not only our support for the arts, but our commitment and support for projects that seek to bring access of the arts to audiences who would not otherwise have the opportunity,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Cape Town Opera's Head of Business Development, Lesley Liddle says,' Our sincere thanks to the City of Cape Town for making it possible for us to take opera out of theatres and into the communities. Sharing the magic of Opera Blocks with moms, caregivers and children in Delft and Mitchell's Plain has just been so rewarding. It is incredibly amazing to see how the young ones respond to the music and movements. Our singers have just had the best time at these community based projects. We can't wait to introduce more moms, caregivers and children to opera.'
