Dodoma: Tanzania and Malawi have successfully concluded a trade standoff following bilateral discussions aimed at enhancing trade relations, fostering economic cooperation, and addressing existing challenges. According to Nam News Network, a jointly-signed communique was released after a meeting between senior officials from both countries. This document confirmed their agreement to lift trade restrictions and their commitment to finalizing the legal frameworks necessary for signing the Simplified Trade Regime Agreement (STRA). The communique, signed by Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and Malawian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Gladys Tembo, highlighted the delegations' pledge to complete the relevant legal framework for the STRA. They aim to implement it upon the completion of domestic legal processes by May 30. Additionally, Tanzania had imposed similar trade restrictions on South Africa, which had previously blocked agricultural imports from T anzania. However, Tanzanian Minister of Agriculture Hussein Bashe announced in a public notice on April 25 that these restrictions were suspended as of April 23. The official lifting of the ban on April 26 followed diplomatic efforts from both Malawi and South Africa, which were directed at encouraging dialogue and reinforcing cooperation.
