Swakopmund Launches Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, Emphasizes Stakeholder Collaboration

Swakopmund – John Mutorwa, the Minister of Works and Transport, emphasized the need for robust collaboration among stakeholders for the effective implementation of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. Speaking at the launch of the Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in Swakopmund on Friday, Mutorwa highlighted the necessity of transforming the action plan from mere documentation into tangible projects and programs to benefit Namibians, residents, and visitors.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), CEO of the Roads Authority, the campaign faces challenges such as the rising prevalence of fraudulent activities, including fake driving licenses and vehicle license discs. To combat this, officials equipped with special instruments will be deployed during the festive campaign to address these issues. Lutombi warned drivers to ensure their documentation is in order, highlighting the deployment of a Mobile Vehicle Testing Station at various roadblocks. This station, boasting state-of-the-art technology, will test vehicles for emissions, brakes, lights, and overall safety compliance. Lutombi expressed confidence that this unit would enhance road safety standards and reduce the risk of road crashes caused by poorly maintained or non-compliant vehicles.

Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, CEO of the Motor Vehicles Association (MVA) Fund, acknowledged a decline in road traffic crashes during the last festive season. However, she noted the significant financial burden these accidents impose on the Fund. Annually, an average of N.dollars 200 million is spent on medical costs, with an additional N.dollars 80 million on other direct claims. Martins-Hausiku detailed that these costs cover a range of services, from on-scene attendance to recovery or death, including first-aid, rescue services, hospital costs, and rehabilitation care.

The Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in Swakopmund is a crucial initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and enhancing safety, underpinned by the collaboration of various stakeholders and the implementation of advanced technology.
